Are you ready for fall?

We are now approaching a frost-bitten landscape painted in shades of red, brown and yellow. This season's beautiful colors, or "ruska" as we call it in Finland, is still a perfect time to spend outdoors. Just make sure you are fully prepared for all kinds of outdoor activities that are coming up. Here are some quick tips and advice from us!

Camping

Thinking of camping under the stars? Don't be put off by the cool temperature, there is still an opportunity to enjoy nature. Just make sure you're prepared, whether you're an experienced bushcrafter or new to camping there are a few things to keep in mind.

Bushcraft level– A good rule for you experienced campers is to remember to bring the five C's of survival (as invented by expert Dave Canterbury). The five C's are cutting tools, cover, combustion, container and cordages. Anyone attempting bushcraft should have a basic knowledge of how to obtain fire, water, shelter and food.

Beginner level Getting away from the big city and instead getting out into nature is really refreshing for both mind, body and soul. But you're actually out in the wilderness, so make sure you're prepared for unexpected challenges. Therefore, it is important that you pack the right things. Below you'll find a list of what we recommend for you to bring, who are new to camping:

  • Tent.
  • Clothing according to the weather (rain, sun, wind or cold).
  • Knife, pocket knife and or an smaller axe that you can carry.
  • Sleeping bag and sleeping mat.
  • Storm kitchen, mug, firesteel, cutlery.
  • Water, food, snacks (nuts, dried fruit, etc.).
  • Flashlight, batteries, power bank.
  • First aid kit.

Cooking outdoors

Is there anything better than both starting and ending the day with a meal out in nature? Not if you ask us at Roselli! With the right tools and a few fresh ingredients, you can easily put together an easy-cooked and delicious meal outdoors.

So what can we cook this autumn? Depending on where you are in the world, you can often manage to get hold of some chanterelles if the snow has not settled on the ground. Pack your grill accessories, a few ingredients and of course a sharp knife. Then head out into the woods to find yourself some chanterelles.

Roselli's chanterelle toast:

  • 4 pieces of toast bread or any other light bread of your choice.
  • 1 shallot.
  • 0.5 dl cream.
  • 1 handful of grated parmesan.
  • 2 handfuls of fresh chanterelles of your choice.
  • 1 handful of parsley
  • A dollop of butter or oil to fry in.
  • Salt and pepper.
  • Cooking equipment such as a bowl, grill accessories and a sharp knife.

Do this:

  1. Fry the mushrooms in oil or butter in a frying pan until the mushroom's liquid has disappeared and the mushrooms have taken on a little color. Add onions, fry golden brown together with the mushrooms and then pour on cream. Let it boil for a minute. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Grill the bread over the glow bed. Preferably with a grill grate for an extra good grill taste.
  3. Spread the mushrooms on the bread slices and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and parsley. All done!

Autumn hike

Autumn is perfect for long hikes due to cooler temperatures and the disappearance of mosquitoes. Make the most of autumn by discovering different trails and nature where you live or somewhere in the world you've never been before.

We've asked some of our Roselli ambassadors to share their favorite spots for the optimal hike.

Taylan Honeycutt – USA

Grundy Forest Day Loop, a hike that has always held a big place in Taylan's heart and is, according to him, the perfect trail. Here you will find beautiful streams and waterfalls, 400-year-old Hemlock trees, cascades and canyons, rock overhangs and towers, beautiful flowers and abundant wildlife. This trail is part of the Fiery Gizzard trail which is a beautiful 13 mile long trail that was recognized in many famous backpacking magazines and their top 25 best trails in the country.

This beautiful trail is located in Tracy City Tennessee and is part of South Cumberland State Park.

Pedro Sariñana – Mexico City

The volcano Iztaccihuatl is the third highest mountain in Mexico, with its peak at 5,230 meters above sea level, and is Pedro's absolute favorite hike in the country. If you're not used to high altitudes and steep trails, some acclimatization may be in order before you start. If you don't feel like climbing to the top, then the mountain is inside the Izta-Popo National Park, which is also an incredible place to hike through dense pine forests or camp under a starry sky.

But according to Pedro, it's totally worth it to hike all the way to the top – not only because of the physical challenge it requires, but the view from up there is amazing! You can see most of Mexico's great peaks and you also get to go through glaciers and rock formations.

Pedro's must-haves for a successful hiking:

Harmonious morning fishing

There's nothing like an early fall morning by the lake. When all you hear are birds chirping, the brisk breeze going through the trees and the dull sound of waves lapping against the shore. Once you have caught a fish there are a few things you need to keep in mind;

Be sure to store your catch in a cool place until you're ready to prepare it. The first thing you need to do is fillet the fish, that is, separate the meat from the fish, without the bones. To do this, you can use our small or large fish knife. They are intended for handling and filleting fish, but also work well for other kitchen tasks.
